Napa County, CA - Getaway Adventures offers a special departure of its popular "Pedal Through Paradise" bike & multi-sport tours of Hawaii's Big Island. This tour will feature an exclusive guided tour with local volcanologist. Participants will get up close and personal with lava! Departure dates are1/25, 2/9, 2/16, 3/16 & 3/30. The all-inclusive 6 or 8 day trips feature luxury accommodations, first class restaurants, and easy to moderate cycling for all abilities, ranging from 30 to 50 miles a day. Getaway's tour leaders are knowledgeable about Hawaii and accompany cyclists for safety, comfort, and information. SAMPLE TOUR ITINERARY:
Day One begins with a check-in at the Hilo Hawaiiain Hotel in historic Hilo, followed by a personal bike fitting and a look at the Tsunami museum in Hilo.Early arrivals get a 12 mile tour up to Hilo's famed waterfalls.
Day Two takes cyclists from Pahoa to the fertile Puna District to tour tropical forests and view black sand beaches and spectacular seascapes. Palm trees, papaya farms, and nude beaches make Puna a haven for bohemians, artists, and the counter culture.
From the lush rainforest, cyclists continue southwest to the town of Volcano at 4,000-ft.and a stay at the Volcano House.
Day Three offers a hiking adventure in Volcanoes National Park, to the Kilaueu Caldera and the Thurston Lava Tube. The afternoon features a unique downhill bike ride to vistas of immense old lava flows cutting off the park road. At sunset guests watch a memorable "red hot" lava show and take the support van back to the Volcano House for a top-notch dinner and comfortable night's rest.
Day Four is a full day of bicycling through the Ka'u District; a fun 50-mile ride from the town of Volcano to the beautiful hamlet of Captain Cook. Guests stop for a swim at Punalu'u's famous black sand beach, swim with sea turtles, and later visit Na'alehu, the southernmost town in the United States.
Day Five is a bike, kayak, and snorkel day. After a hearty breakfast at the Aloha Café, guests cycle down to Kealakekua Bay, a protected marine sanctuary, kayak 1.5 miles across to the Captain Cook Memorial, and snorkel in warm water with 70+ feet of visibility and a good chance to swim with dolphins. Later, they visit the City of Refuge National Historic Park, and cycle into Kailua Kona and the Royal Kona Resort. There participants can opt for an optional luau dinner show.
Day Six is either a beach & ride day, or an all cycling day. Guests may ride in the support van to Hapuna Beach for a morning of bodysurfing, beachcombing on the white sands, or sunbathing. Or, guests may cycle the 33-mile stretch of the Queens Highway, famous as the bike leg of the Iron Man Triathlon. After lunch, participants cycle 10 miles north to the town of Waimea, a cool 2600-ft., and home to the historic Parker Cattle Ranch, one of the largest ranches in the U.S. Dinner is at Merriman's considered one of the finest restaurants on the Big Island.
Day Seven. Guests cycle the old deserted Mamalahoa Highway and descend along the green slopes to Honoka'a, past vistas of snow-capped Mauna Kea, an immense volcano. At the rugged-cut cliffs of Waipio Valley guests hike past waterfalls in an area once home to indigenous Hawaiians.
Day Eight is a comfortable downhill ride along the Hamakua Coast with its tradewinds and flower-scented air. Back in Hilo, good-byes are shared and guests prepare for flights back to the mainland.
